SERMON INFO
Be sure to check out the Video...

This is the sermon that launched the book 'A Tale of Two Sons' by John MacArthur. Posted on SermonAudio with Permission from VCY America (Ingrid Schlueter).

One of the most familiar, best-loved stories of the Bible is also one of the most misunderstood and poorly taught. There's more drama, raw emotion, and profound meaning to the parable of the prodigal son than most people realize.

In this sermon, John takes you back in time to Jesus' masterful telling of the penetrating story, helping you hear, understand, and respond to it the same way His original listeners did. Along the way, John restores the brilliance of the parable, giving you engrossing cultural and historical background, and unveiling a shocking, surprise ending.

This sermon takes you inside God's tender heart for sinners, and spurs you to deeper study of His Word as you see new richness unfold from even this most familiar passage.

“ Amazing sermon! ”
I too have heard many sermons on this parable, but I’ve never heard half of what is in this sermon. To name just one, the explanation of the culture of shame and honor at that time was very enlightening. Dr. MacArthur’s ending for the incomplete story was absolutely shocking! But of course, it was and is the truth. We get comfortable with the gospel sometimes, and we forget how shocking it is.

This was THE BEST sermon I've ever heard on "the Prodigal." And I've heard many in my 35 years as a Christian. Superior!

“ Prob Best Sermon on Prodigal Son Ever! ”
Every once in a while you hear a sermon and can tell, even while it's being preached, "Wow, there's something remarkable about this message that puts it in a class by itself!" This sermon by MacArthur is one such message (though it doesn't begin to feel that way until about 30 minutes in). It's carefully argued, exegetically rigorous, theologically profound, packed with ancient cultural details, engages the imagination, and most importantly, moves to worship. Really deserves to be at the top of the list!

“ Great! Great! Great! ”
This is my favorite message on what is traditionally called: The Parable of the Prodigal Son. The cultural information gave me a greater understanding of just what point the Lord was making to the listeners. Our Lord, as always, knew--and knows--what He's doing.

I've been a christian for a long time and I've listened to and read MacArthur many many times but this sermon is a gem in the crown.

Praise the Lord for this wonderful exposition of Scripture which exalted the free grace of God through our Lord's three parables. Our missionary family here in Cambodia was greatly blessed. Thank you.

“ This is Expository Preaching! ”
This message is superb! It is an absolute joy to listen to. I've heard it three times already! It is a beautiful example of expository preaching and we can learn much from this. Also, I must commend MacArthur's incredible skills as an imaginative preacher. What a gift God has given to him!

I believe this story is our story. It should be read to the dying too for its reassuring message of God's incomprehensible love for His children.

Expositional preaching at it's best. Dr. McArthur explains in it's broadest terms connecting it to the entire passage, the through the culture and historic background, Jesus's storey is understood in it's original intent. It does everything good preaching is suppose to do, explain the original meaning and glorifying God through the genuis of the scriptures. John Jones

“ Great forgiveness. ”
I never heard a such clear, profound explanation on this text. It moved me to tears when it presented the grace, the forgiveness and generosity of God. Christ died for me so that I may be accepted by God.
