Abel's sacrifice was accepted because it pleased God. Cain's offering was rejected because it did not. Abel came to God in faith as a poor beggar and Cain came to God as a proud, self-made man, trying to impress God with his works. We see the same thing in those who came to Jesus. Those who came crying for mercy, in desperation, and believing He was the Son of God found mercy, while those who came asking what good thing they could do went away sorrowful. The way of Cain is the way most people go. Without faith it is impossible to please God.
