Ever notice that God gives His commands for a reason? Usually it is to protect us from harm, especially from ourselves. It happens to us all; even the wisest man ever, Solomon, found out that hard way that God has His reasons. We know what God says to do, or not do, yet something attracts us. Each step away from God leads down a steep slope. The consequences also have long reaching results. What effects us now may reach others. Our sin can void our agreements with God. Salvation won't be removed but blessings can be. It's not like God asks a great deal of us, but we as humans have a tendency to feel like God is being a task master. Such thinking spoils the blessings, and hampers our relationship with Him. It is the same as having one foot out in the world and one in church. Maybe it will even lead to irrational fear. Jeroboam, when he came to power, came to this point. He wasn't full following God, got sacred that the people would go back to Rehoboam and kill him. Some church leaders kinda get that way too. Pride and fear pulling good men away from God. Bad decisions made so we don't lose what we are afraid of loosing. But God may be wanting to do something that will bring us further along. Our good intentions however aren't good enough. God wants us to trust and obey; that is the best way of avoiding the danger that is lurking nearby ready to pounce on us.
