Last week, concerning the law, I stated that the law is good and it is good because it comes from the One who is alone, good. The law is a revelation of God's own character and will for men, and for this reason we ought to say that the law is not sin, but sin is known through the law. Specifically the law names that which God demands, and where we have fallen short of the glory of God. This law is in many respects felt, as each man bears the Image of God, and we find even greater understanding and aggravation as we hear of the specifics of our duty towards God in His Word. The very thing we need, to be named by, to be governed by, to guided and shaped by God's Word, we do not wish for while we remain committed to our sin and rebellion. Obedience then is not only adopting the nomenclature of the law, calling things as they are, but also hating that which God forbids, that which is contrary to His will, and by His Spirit is committed to eradicating from your heart and hands.
