Jesus' warning, 'Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions (Luke 12:15),' infers that, natively, man does very much think life consists in having an abundance. The 'American dream' is sadly represented by the words of the rich fool in Luke 12:19, 'Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.' Leisure, pleasure and plenty are those things which most frantically pursue moved by the delusion that in them is happiness. This message begins a consideration of seven Proverbs which have in common a 'better...than' comparison. In the cases of six of the seven the inferior element in the comparison is wealth. Proverbs 15:16 ('Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than...') and 15:17 ('Better is a dish of vegetables where love is, than...') are interpreted and applied.
