Tithing is not the same as giving. The Tithe is paid as an obligation. It is never considered a gift in Scripture and is never referred to in that way. However, if the Tithe is paid merely as an obligation, this reduces the Tithe to mere legalism. There is an underlying purpose in the paying of the Tithe that is critical to generating a spiritual motivation for obeying the obligation. The universal principle of the Tithe is that God is the Owner/Creator of all material things. Therefore, all of us are merely stewards of God's possessions. The “firstfruit” of all that comes from God's possessions under our stewardship belongs to God. This is a universal economic principle. Paying the Tithe signifies our understanding of both God's ownership of everything, our stewardship before God, and our testimony regarding this universal economic principle to all pagans surrounding our culture. This is a principle testimony to God's sovereignty.
