This message was preached on the Lord's Day morning that Chris Marshall was ordained to diaconal ministry. There are a couple of spots in the start where the speaker steps away from the mic and the recording is low but the issue is corrected in the second half.
Outline:
Introduction: This passage is about the nature of Christian ministry. All those who are saved fill the office of believer while some are set apart for the public roles of pastors and elders and deacons.
I. Setting the stage (vv. 1-3):
'The best ministers are not those who are worried about what the people will say about their ministries but what God will say.'
'One of the greatest challenges facing the evangelical church today is a weakened, therapeutic view of the role of the leaders or officers of the church. We see them as men who must be odorless, colorless, and tasteless; neither giving offense or taking offense at anything. He may listen to our problems and receive our complaints and offer us 'non-directive counseling' but he must not confront our sin or offer us corrective exhortation or admonition. Above all, of course, he must not be judgemental.'
II. The minister of God described (vv. 4-10).
Paul begins with the need for patience, moves on to necessary suffering and then to the benefits gained.
When the rubber hits the road men turn not to the courthouse or the school house, but the church-house. We hold nothing but possess everything.
