A great danger we constantly face is wishing that the circumstances of our life were different and thinking that if they were, then we would be more motivated, focused and effective for the Kingdom. We then excuse our lack of zeal for the things of the Lord by saying that should our circumstances be different then we would be more zealous. Self-pity, however, is a lust that keeps us from living for the Lord and from being productive for Him. Peter exhorts us to forsake such lusts. We have many examples in Scripture of people whose hearts stayed focused upon God's glory despite their own very difficult circumstances.
