We need to be reminded from time to time that God chastens those who are his children. This means that God has his eye on us and directly involved in a continual work going on in our lives. This work is likened repeatedly to the way an earthly father corrects his children whom he loves. Chastening certainly involves pain and punishment at times, but it is not simply about punishment for bad behavior. It is about directing, correcting, and teaching that is designed to bring us more and more into the image of his Son, so that we might be partakers of his holiness. Being chastened of the Lord is one of the assurances we have that we belong to Him. It's absence is evidence we do not.
